    Where Do I Start?

I'm making myself ill cos I keep getting letters from Debt Collection companies. Now I have got alot of debt and I know its my fault cos I've been stupid and not done anything. I thought they'd stop writing but now their threatening court and stuff and I'm sick with worry.
I tried my local CAB but they've not got any appointments for ages and I've gotta do somethingf or I'm going to end up back in hospital. The thing is I don't know where to start sorting the mess out. I've thought about going bankrupt but don't know how that works and I don't want my name in the papers and all that sort of thing.

Hello and welcome to our forum, you have come to the right place for help. Most CABs are systematically understaffed and overwhelmed with requests for advice and often turn people away.

Please try not to worry and make yourself ill over your debts, all debts can be dealt with, however, to be able to help you, we need more information about your debts.

Before considering bankruptcy, we should explore all the options available. You should also be aware that there are certain debts which cannot be included in a bankruptcy.

Please provide as much information as you can about your debts, you do not have to fill everything in if you don't know the answer, but it helps if you can tell us as much as you can.

Account type: (loan, credit card, overdraft, mobile phone, etc.)
    Approx. outstanding balance:
Is there a judgment (CCJ) on this account:
    Original creditor: (bank or company)
Current owner: (if different from above)
Current DCA: (whoever is chasing you for the debt)
    Previous DCAs: (if applicable)
Approx. start date: (when you opened the account/applied for the card/loan/mobile, etc.)
How did you apply? (online, over the phone, in branch, advert, etc.)
Approx. default date: (when you stopped making regular payments)
Approx. date of last payment: (including tokens, reduced payments or DMP repayments)
    Was there any PPI?
Have you requested a copy of your agreement? If so, when?

I am a Researcher specialising in Consumer Credit and I'm here to assist with any concerns or queries.

Sorry I've not been back I've been trying to sort things. Its a real mess and theres so much stuff and so many letters I really can't start to sort them. Some its obvious but lots have all different balances and companies which I've never heard of.
I know fairly much what I borrowed from where to start with, but now some of those places seem to have sold debts or gone to court maybe. I really don't know how to find out which is which as alot of the paper doesn't seem to match anything I know I had.

    Hi,

I've been trying and trying to sort out all these letters, but nothing seems to link to anything else. I think I've got something sorted and then the amount changes. There seem to be lots of people chasing me for the same debt, is this likely?

It's easier to go by my credit file if that's OK. That's the only place I seem to have loads of debts listed in a way I can understand them. I'm not sure why some I know I've got are marked as satisfied and others I know I haven't got are showing with balances outstanding. I've never had any loans with a company called Lowells but they seem to have some accounts. There are other examples but I can't remember the names of the others.

Have you thought about committing everything to paper or even a spreadsheet where you may be able to see at a glance what you have - list of who you owe, amount, repayment method & amount etc etc. You make mention of Lowells - they are a common or garden debt collector who buy up portfolios of debts. It may also be worth you speaking to National Debtline - never speak to a company who say you have to pay for their advice.

Thanks The Crank. I've tried writing them down, but as I said nothing seems to match up. I didn't know debts could be sold though so I guess that means that something settled on the Noddle file might show as belonging to some else then.
That's helpful cos I might be able to make more sense of things now. I'll try to put everything together somehow over the new few days and post back.
